Robert Mirabal brings a certain sensuality to his music that compels every listener to contemplate his message. Cellos are used like jazz instruments and electric guitars are used in only the most graceful way. His vocals, sung in Tiwa have a great intensity to them. The alchemical magic of Mirabal’s solo flute melodies intertwines effortlessly with percussion, didjeridoo, ambient keyboards and guitar. A member of the Taos Pueblo tribe, his life has centered around music and art as a way of worship and respect for all beings. Since his first public performance at the age of 13, Mirabal has been a prolific musician, composer, painter and author. In addition to hand-crafted native flutes, he uses rattles, rainstick, drums, and crow feathers on this album. Robert Mirabal invites you into his world for a bowl of chili and stories and songs of his Taos, New Mexico life. Interspersing stories of his childhood which are sometimes heart-wrenching with songs of hope, love and humor we're given a visual picture of his world. If you have a CD rom drive in your computer you can see these images on the enhanced CD containing a video of the song, "Indians, Indians" which mixes the New Mexico landscape with live concert footage. Mirabal has successfully bridged the gap between traditional Native values and contemporary American society with his special brand of rock, poetry and storytelling. Winner in the category of "spoken word" at the 2004 Indian Summer Festival.
About Robert Mirabal
"There's always a flute player in every tribe. I never would have guessed it at the time, but I've become that flute player." The tribe is the Taos Pueblo. The time was when Robert was 18 and he encountered for the first time, the Native American flute Now, his handcrafted flutes are in the Smithsonian National Museum.
From the powwow auction where he saw that first flute, to Japan, England and all the world, Robert plays with the noble purpose of honoring the land, his family, his ancestors and his tribe who have occupied the same area of Northern New Mexico for over a thousand years. While deeply aware of his heritage, Robert looks at the responsibility universally: "I offer my work as a healing for the human spirit and a rememberence of why we are all here together."
In addition to the music and instruments he creates, Robert is also a celebrated painter, poet and playwright. He is the author of A Skeleton of a Bridge, a book of poetry, prose and short stories. He has lent his words and insights to several educational and documentary films, including two narrated by Robert Redford, "Silent Witness" and "Sacred Sites." He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Award and the New York Dance and Performer's "Bessie" Award for composition. Robert has also been named SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR twice in 1998 and again in 1999 at the annual Native American Music Awards.
