In Loving Memory

Checkers Thomas
NAIS Mascot

Checkers Thomas passed away of kidney and liver failure at 4:18 PM on March 21st, 2007. She was a very special companion of Ralph Thomas for 14 years. Checkers was always by Ralph's side. In the room where Ralph works, Checkers had her own special pillow she would set on while Thomas toiled away on his computer or talked on the phone. In the living room was another special checkers pillow she had while Ralph and Barbara watched TV. She also had her own special place and pillows inside the cabin on the Private-Eye, Thomas's boat.

Checkers Thomas was a Fox Terrier Ralph And Barbara found after the passing away of the original NAIS Mascot Inspector Gadget. She was only six months old when she came into the Thomas home and business. For 14 years she faithfully executed her role as the office NAIS mascot. She was a very friendly dog and liked everyone and anyone. Her favorite food was steak cooked medium rare. Her favorite pass time was playing catch with Ralph and Barbara. She is survived by Sheba Thomas and SnitchIt Thomas, two other dogs in the Thomas family.

Statement From Ralph Thomas
Checkers was my very best and special friend for almost 14 years. She was almost always by my side rather I was working, playing or sleeping. She was always right next to me when I was working since I work in a spare room upstairs in our home a good 95% of my work life. Barbara and I are rather stay-at-home type people and Checkers was always part of our relaxation life and was always right next to me or on my lap. At night she always sleep right next to me in the bed. Her life is proof positive that dogs are man's best friend. Checkers lived a very long and a very happy life with us and we thank God for bringing her into our live. She basically just passed away from old age like we all have to do some day I guess. It's hard to say goodbye. She brought a great deal of joy to Barbara and myself. Dogs know a lot of things that people don't and she was always by my side through thick and thin. Checkers was always a highly comforting influence in my life. She taught me a great deal about kindness, giving to others and being tuff. She had been sick for several weeks and we knew that she was going. She had been through some of these health problems in the past couple of years of her life but managed to bounce back and I think she just got too old to do that any more. There was not much the vet could do but make her comfortable. I took her last day on earth off from work and spent it with her comforting her. I sort of knew that this was going to be her last day and could see it in her eyes. We spent some quality time together. I could tell that she was going so I just held her. I don't think she was in much pain since she was on a lot of medication her vet had given us for her in her final days. She died in my arms at 4:18 PM on March 21st, 2007. It was tuff and one of the tuffest things I have ever been through but we are very happy to have had the 14 years of joy with her. I would like to thank the hundreds of friends from around the country and around the world who have contacted us about the passing of Checkers. There seems to be a great deal of dog lovers around and that makes me feel much better. We have two other dogs named Sheba and Snitchit and they seem to make the pain a little less and have been a great comfort to us through the passing away of Checkers.
