INVESTIGATOR'S GUIDE
TO FREE SEARCHES
ON THE INTERNET
INTRODUCTION |

-
- The Internet has got to be the world's largest resource for those who
conduct investigations. Just a
- few years ago, investigators kind of racked their brain in attempts
to find useful information with
- their computer. Today, those problems are gone. Literally millions
of web sites, databases and information resources for the investigator
can now be tapped on the web. However, somewhat of an opposite problem
is now present. That is, there is now so much information to tap into,
one is extremely overwhelmed. You now type a subject into a search engine
and come back with thousands of hits. There just isn't any way to weed
through it and find the information you are looking for. Aside from the
sheer volume, there is also what I call the garbage factor. That is, there
is so much garbage and useless sites on the internet, you get overwhelmed
with how to weed that out and only use the useful sites. In this respect,
the web has become modern man's biggest time waster. This manual provides
a solution to this problem.
-
- Free Searches On The Internet is the result of six years of daily searching
on the internet to find the best sites, the best searches to use and the
best databases you can tap into. Aside from actual searching by the author,
thousands of other investigators and information searchers have contributed
to the information by sending suggestions and by posting important and
useful sites. Members of the National Association Of Investigative Specialists
now numbering almost three thousand investigators have frequently sent
in suggestions as have people who subscribe to the private-eye mailing
list. Free Searches On The Internet is extremely valuable as a time saver
and valuable in another way. Some of the sites are not even indexed or
indexed very poorly on the search engines and are hard to find or can not
be found on the search engines at all.

- About five years ago (light years ago in computer time) the first edition
of Free Searches On The Internet was released. At that time, very few state
government databases could be accessed on the internet. In fact, the first
edition didn't even have a section for those listings. In this edition,
you'll find an extensive selection of state government public records databases
you can access from UCC filings, to criminal records searches to real property
searches to state corporate records. Many states also have databases such
as sexual offender databases, vital records, professional licensing, unclaimed
property and other databases you can tap. Many of these searches are free.
Many of these sties have actual databases you can tap into right on the
internet. Other sites will refer you to a name, address and telephone number
to access the record. In the state and county public records section, we
have included a number of directory lookup sources so you can quickly find
county courthouse addresses, determine the county a city is in and quickly
locate state government agencies. This enables you to quickly go directly
to the sources of information bypassing all middlemen and cutting the cost
of obtaining the information down to free or almost free even when the
specific record you are after doesn't have an actual database on the internet.

- You will also find a huge selection of federal government public records
databases you can plug into. From the new federal state educational defaulted
borrowers database, to SEC searches of publicly traded companies, to death
claims and social security number validation databases, these free searches
on the internet are often very useful and cost you zero.

- The free phonebooks and criss-cross directories on the internet and
the sections of databases on how to find people on the internet can be
quite useful to the professional investigator. Many of these searches can
be used to help you track down people and obtain addresses. One of the
most often overlooked extremely useful searches on the net is the searches
that let you find comments made by a certain party in newsgroups. These
type searches can be valuable when conducting background checks of various
types of people such as expert witnesses. You'll also find aids in this
book to help you determine if an individual or a company has a web page
up and running which will be extremely useful to any type of investigation.

- Also included in this manual is a list of the best information brokers
with web sites on the Internet. Of course, very few of these searches are
free but it's certainly a user's market these days and prices are usually
extremely low. Perhaps one of the best information brokers I have found
on the Internet in the last few years is a company that specializes in
low-cost State Of Texas public records searches simply going by the name
of Publicdata.com. For about ten cents per look-up, you can run tags, driver
license information, state criminal records, voter registration and a number
of county level records searches with many more to be added in the future.
Information brokers certainly provide useful information but should only
be used after all avenues of tapping free data and public records data
yourself. This material contains a comprehensive list of information brokers
and dial-up services you can use when the need for "for fee"
information is needed.

the Internet is the search engine searches you use to find a web site.
In this section of the manual, we have attempted to list only the best
search engines and provided a number of multi-search engines that save
you time when searching the net. There are really hundreds, perhaps thousands
of search engines these days but only a few of them are worth your time.
We have attempted to list the top five percent that you will find useful.
