- Get out of the car!
An opportunity to do some foot surveillance got me to thinking about how
easy it is to get lazy when doing surveillance. It turned into a short

Private Investigative Trends From The Past
Why study history? Because it almost always repeats itself. The private
investigative profession is rich in history when it comes to past trends,
marketing and advertising and we can always learn something from studying
this. The Spy And Private-Eye Museum has collected an assortment of artifacts
from the past along these lines and I thought I would share them with
you.

Insurance
fraud, divorces drive growing demand for private investigator services
Insurance fraud is a fast-growing area for private eyes and helps keep
115 licensed investigators busy just in Shelby County. But it's just a
piece of the business for guys like Gauvin, who might be tracking down
internal theft at a company one day and staking out an ex-wife the next.

What
Insurance Agents and Brokers Should Expect under the New Anti-Money Laundering
Regulations for Life Insurance Companies The USA PATRIOT Act includes
provisions intended to prevent the financial services industry, including
the insurance sector, from being used for money laundering and terrorist
financing by criminals and terrorists. The Act requires insurance companies
to establish anti-money laundering (AML) programs that comply with minimum
standards developed by the Department of the Treasury. Regulations issued
by the Treasury Department and its Financial Crimes Enforcement Network
(FinCEN) establish minimum requirements for insurance company anti-money
laundering programs and require insurers to report suspicious transactions.

History- The Minifon Watch Microphone, 1950's
Take a look at photos of a state-of-the-art high end microphone built
into a watch from the 1950's. The Minifon watch microphone was an optional
accessory with the Minifon recorder. The watch microphone was a highly
popular accessory with private investigators. The cord would have to go
up one's arm and then down the body to the body harness for the Minfon.
Talk about "wearing a wire" this was it! However, by today's
standards, since the wire stuck out from the end of the watch; it just
would not be considered very covert. This system was used by private investigators,
undercover law enforcement and spy organizations throughout the world
in the 1950's. Below are some close-up photos of the famous Minifon watch
microphone.

History - Fred Otash, Hollywood Private Investigator
Of The 1960's
The 1960's was a different age for the private investigative agency. There
was no such thing as no-fault divorce and the phone book ads in big cities
such as Los Angeles were full of private investigators much like the phone
book ads for attorneys of today. Fred Otash was known as the king of the
hill in the Hollywood California area when it came to this type of work.
That is, until he did something that made J. Edgar Hoover mad!
Workplace
theft on the rise - police
Theft by staff has steadily increased over the past seven years, but soft-hearted
bosses mean many cases never reach court. The number of cases of theft
as a servant or "misappropriation" in the workplace increased
from about 1000 cases in 1999 to almost 1700 last year, according to police
statistics.

History-Antique Polygraph, 1930's
Using an invention that measured

that measured pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiratory changes at the
same time. Larson went on to develop what has become known as the R/I
(relevant/irrelevant) procedure.

change.
