Right now I am using a Sony Vaio laptop. I LOVE this computer, it has lots of storage 9MB of hard drive space, and it has 128MB of RAM. It has built-in Modem and Ethernet connection, and weighs just a few pounds. The only problem I have with it is that it the battery that comes standard with it only lasts about 30 minutes, you would have to buy the extended battery.

In general when buying a laptop:

1) Make sure you have at least 128MB of RAM
2) At least 9MB of Hard Drive (6MB at the very least)
3) Built-in Modem
4) Should have a floppy drive and a CDROM drive, these can be connected or inside the computer. When they are inside the weight of the computer goes up.

Good luck with your purchase! Oh, and buy from a local store as often as possible so you can take it right back if there is a problem. If you buy online, make sure the place you buy from allows you to return within 30 days without a penalty if you don't like the computer.

What maintenance should I be doing on my P/C and how to do it and how often?

Roger,

Great question. These are the things you should be doing on a regular basis with your computer in order to keep it in good working order.

1) Install Norton Utilities. This program will monitor a number of functions such as disk space, and disk use. The new version has a button on the main page that says Begin Scan. This one button will scan your hard drive and check it for lots of possible problems and will attempt to fix them.

2) Backup your hard drive. Go to your local computer store or Best Buy, and buy a Backup Drive for your computer. I use the Iomega Ditto Drive, but any of them will work as long as you buy the EXTERNAL drive. If you get an External Drive, you can move this from computer to computer with ease. Run your backups at least once a month or every two weeks.

3) Buy McAfee anti-virus program. This program should be run on a weekly basis to scan for computer viruses. These can quickly wipe out your system if you do not look for them.

4) Download the program The Cleaner from www.moosoft.com. This is a program that will search for only Trojan Horses and does a fantastic job of it. You should run this at least once a week, and like your anti-virus program make sure you check for updates on these program BEFORE you run them.
