Memphis Tn. Detective Agency Yellow Page Ads, 1961 In 1961, the Memphis phone book had only two display ads for private investigative services in them and a total of twelve agencies were listed. Above is the largest ad belonging to the National Checking System. Below is the other display ad along with a photo of the yellow page for "detectives" 1961. Note that W. Hayes Abernathy of The National Checking System was a member of The Association Of British Detectives, World Secret Service Association, Allied Finance Adjusters and National Finance Adjusters. The firm obviously was heavy into auto repossessions and skip tracing for that service. Note also that The National Checking System has been "checking since 1919". The Better Employment System, Inc. (yellow page ad below) was the only other full display ad listed in Memphis in 1961. Unlike places like Hollywood California in 1961, divorce cases was not a high demand private investigation in Memphis in 1961. Of the one dozen agencies listed in the yellow pages in 1961, not one of them mentions domestic or divorce investigations.
