Understanding The Native American Eagle Spirit
The Eagle is the most sacred animal to most Native Americans. Not only do most Native Americans call them the master of the sky, the Eagle is believed to take prayers to the Great Spirit. Most believe that the Eagle is picked by God to bring messages. They can soar higher and see farther than any other bird. The Eagle is considered the leader of all animals. The Eagle represents strength, power, and is ruler of the sky. The Hopi Indians capture them and keep them on their roof tops for protection and spend a great deal of time caring for them. Many tribes such as the Hopi go high upon cliffs to capture them. Eagle feathers are prized possessions and used in various religious ceremonies.

Almost every American Tribe has what they call an Eagle dance. The Hopi Eagle Dance Kachina appears at night ceremonies in March along with the Mud Heads. The dancer imitates the motion and the cry of an eagle to perfection. The Hopi Eagle Kachina Dancer is called Kwa. To wear or hold an Eagle feather Native Americans believe gives them immediate notice with the Great Spirit. One of the highest honors among Indian people is to be given an Eagle feather. When one holds an Eagle Feather, one must be of clear mind and not consume any drugs or alcohol. If an Eagle Feather is dropped on the ground, it must be cleansed. Most Indians would rather lose their horse or there home than lose an Eagle Feather.
